"bio": "Jon Kleinberg (born 1971, Boston) is a Professor of Computer Science at Cornell University. He received his B.S. from Cornell in 1993 and his Ph.D. from MIT in 1996. His current research is focused on the mathematical analysis and modeling of the combinatorial structure of networks and information. His recent work includes an improvement to the HITS algorithm which he developed at IBM's Almaden Research Laboratory as a Visiting Scientist in the CLEVER project. HITS is a very influential algorithm of his, conceptually similar to the PageRank algorithm of Larry Page and Sergey Brin. In fact, some credit Kleinberg's work as the inspiration for PageRank.nnMany students affectionately call him the "Rebel King" (an anagram for "Kleinberg"). The "Rebel King" phenomenon began in an undergraduate course taught by Jon Kleinberg, when an unknown student entered the lecture hall in the middle of the class, announced in a loud voice that "Kleinberg is Rebel King," and then promptly left the lecture hall. The "Rebel King" tradition continued in subsequent years, when subsequent classes taught by Jon Kleinberg received similar visits from an unknown student who again announced loudly that "Kleinberg is Rebel King" before making a rapid exit. While co-teaching a class with Eva Tardos students also made an anagram of her name "Astro Dave" which has not caught on. The most recent of these incidents occurred on |March 9, |2007 when two unknown students, shirtless and adorned with red paint, entered the lecture hall of Kleinberg's class on network structures, chanted "Long Live the Rebel King" and ran out another exit. Kleinberg's popularity among students is due in part to his excellence in teaching, which was formally recognized when Cornell's Association of Computer Science Undergraduates awarded him the "Faculty of the Year" award in 2002.nnHe has written numerous prominent papers and articles, including a recent textbook on algorithms, Algorithm Design, co-authored with Éva Tardos and published by Addison-Wesley.nnHis work has been supported by an NSF Career Award, an ONR Young Investigator Award, a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship, a Packard Foundation Fellowship, a Sloan Foundation Fellowship, and grants from the NSF. Kathleen M. Carley's research combines cognitive science, social networks and computer science to address complex social and organizational problems. Her specific research areas are dynamic network analysis, computational social and organization theory, adaptation and evolution, text mining, and the impact of telecommunication technologies and policy on communication, information diffusion, disease contagion and response within and among groups particularly in disaster or crisis situations. She and her lab have developed infrastructure tools for analyzing large scale dynamic networks and various multi-agent simulation systems. The infrastructure tools include ORA, a statistical toolkit for analyzing and visualizing multi-dimensional networks. ORA results are organized into reports that meet various needs such as the management report, the mental model report, and the intelligence report. Another tool is AutoMap, a text-mining system for extracting semantic networks from texts and then cross-classifying them using an organizational ontology into the underlying social, knowledge, resource and task networks. Her simulation models meld multi-agent technology with network dynamics and empirical data. Three of the large-scale multi-agent network models she and the CASOS group have developed in the counter-terrorism area are: BioWar a city-scale dynamic-network agent-based model for understanding the spread of disease and illness due to natural epidemics, chemical spills, and weaponized biological attacks; DyNet a model of the change in covert networks, naturally and in response to attacks, under varying levels of information uncertainty; and RTE a model for examining state failure and the escalation of conflict at the city, state, nation, and international as changes occur within and among red, blue, and green forces. Dr. Carley is the director of the center for Computational Analysis of Social and Organizational Systems (CASOS) which has over 25 members, both students and research staff. She is the founding co-editor with Al. Wallace of the journal Computational Organization Theory and has co-edited several books in the computational organizations and dynamic network area.",

Ng’s goal is to give everyone in the world access to a great education, for free. Today, Coursera partners with some of the top universities in the world to offer high quality online courses, and is the largest MOOC platform in the world.nnNg also works on machine learning with an emphasis on deep learning. He founded and led the “Google Brain” project which developed massive-scale deep learning algorithms. This resulted in the famous “Google cat” result, in which a massive neural network with 1 billion parameters learned from unlabeled YouTube videos to detect cats. More recently, he continues to work on deep learning and its applications to computer vision and speech, including such applications as autonomous driving.",

He held a Ph.D. in mathematics from Columbia University (1957), rabbinic ordination (1952) and a Doctor of Hebrew Literature degree (1955) from Yeshiva University, and honorary Doctor of Technology degrees from Linkoping University, Sweden (1980) and Oulu University, Finland (1994), an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from Yeshiva University (2000), and an honorary degree from the Technion (posthumously in 2004). He was a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery (1994).nnProfessor Rosenfeld was widely regarded as a leading researcher in the world in the field of computer image analysis. Over a period of nearly 40 years he made many fundamental and pioneering contributions to nearly every area of that field. He wrote the first textbook in the field (1969); was founding editor of its first journal (1972); and was co-chairman of its first international conference (1987). He published over 30 books and over 600 book chapters and journal articles, and directed nearly 60 Ph.D. dissertations.nnProfessor Rosenfeld's research on digital image analysis (specifically on digital geometry and digital topology, and on the accurate measurement of statistical features of digital images) in the 1960s and 1970s formed the foundation for a generation of industrial vision inspection systems that have found widespread applications from the automotive to the electronics industry.nnProfessor Rosenfeld was a ba'al koreh (Torah Reader) at Young Israel Shomrai Emunah of Greater Washington for many years until he moved to Baltimore in 2001.nnIn honor of the memory of Professor Rosenfeld, ICCV gives the biennial Azriel Rosenfeld Award to a living person in the recognition of an outstanding life-time contribution to the field of image understanding or computer vision.",

"work": "Professor Haralick has made a series of contributions in computer vision. In the high--level vision area, he has worked on inferring 3D geometry from one or more perspective projection views. He has also identified a variety of vision problems which are special cases of the consistent labeling problem. His papers on consistent labeling, arrangements, relation homomorphism, matching, and tree search translate some specific computer vision problems to the more general combinatorial consistent labeling problem and then discuss the theory of the look--ahead operators that speed up the tree search. This gives a framework for the control structure required in high--level vision problems. He has also extended the forward--checking tree search technique to propositional logic.nIn the low--level and mid--level areas, Professor Haralick has worked in image texture analysis using spatial gray tone co--occurrence texture features. These features have been used with success on biological cell images, x--ray images, satellite images, aerial images and many other kinds of images taken at small and large scales. In the feature detection area, Professor Haralick has developed the facet model for image processing. The facet model states that many low--level image processing operations can be interpreted relative to what the processing does to the estimated underlying gray tone intensity surface of which the given image is a sampled noisy version. The facet papers develop techniques for edge detection, line detection, noise removal, peak and pit detection, as well as a variety of other topographic gray tone surface features.nProfessor Haralick's work in shape analysis and extraction uses the techniques of mathematical morphology. He has developed the morphological sampling theorem which establishes a sound shape/size basis for the focus of attention mechanisms which can process image data in a multiresolution mode, thereby making some of the image feature extraction processes execute more efficiently. He has also developed recursive morphological algorithms for the computation of opening and closing transforms. The recursive algorithms permit all possible sized openings or closings for a given structuring element to be computed in constant time per pixel.nIn the area of document image understanding, Professor Haralick is responsible for the development of comprehensive ground-truthed data bases consisting of over 1500 document images most in English and some in Japanese. The data bases are issued in CDROMs and are being used all around the world by people who are developing character recognition methodologies and techniques for document image structural decomposition. He has developed algorithms for document image skew angle estimation, zone delineation, word and text line bounding box delineation.nIn a series of papers, Professor Haralick has helped influence the computer vision community to be more sensitive to the needs of computer vision performance characterization and covariance propagation. His most recent work is in the pattern recognition area, particularly in the manifold clustering of high dimensional data sets, the application of pattern recognition to mathematical combinatorial problems and in the area of Torah codes, popularly called bible codes. In this area he has co-authored a book with Professor Eliyahu Rips, one of the coauthors of the original Statistical Sciences paper. Dr. Haralick's research has helped develop sophisticated algorithmic and statistical methodology for Torah code experiments, methodology that can differentiate between the tables that are deceptively depicted as encodings in books like Moby Dick and War and Peace from those real encodings that occur in the Torah text.",

"bio": "Hans-Peter Kriegel has been a Professor of Informatics at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universitaet Muenchen, Germany, since 1991. He has published over a wide range of data mining topics including clustering, outlier detection and high-dimensional data analysis. From the beginning of his research he was and still is working on spatial data management and similarity search, now in particular on searching and mining uncertain data, including uncertain spatio-temporal data. In 2009 the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) elected Professor Kriegel an ACM Fellow for his contributions to knowledge discovery and data mining, similarity search, spatial data management, and access-methods for high-dimensional data. So far, his more than 450 publications have been cited more than 30,000 times according to Google Scholar. Microsoft Academic Search currently ranks him Number 5 for field rating in the field of data mining.",
